Your participation in the USC Charity Golf tournament makes you a part of a longstanding relationship between the USC and two national foundations. Proceeds from your participation in the USC Charity Golf Tournament will be gifted on your behalf to the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Canada’s Shinerama Campaign. You will also be given the opportunity to register for the USC Terry Fox Run on September 14 and begin the pledging process. We encourage you to join us on our run day.
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the most common fatal genetically inherited disease, which mainly affects the lungs and digestive system. CF causes severe breathing problems in the lungs. A build up of thick mucus makes it difficult to clear bacteria and leads to cycles of infections and inflammations, which damage the delicate lung tissues.
With the help of Shinerama and other fundraisers, there has been significant improvement in the survival rate of CF sufferers. As of 2002, the median age of survival of a person with Cystic Fibrosis is 37 years of age. This is a huge improvement from the 1960s, when the average age of survival was just 4 years old. The median age of survival is the age beyond which half of the CF population can be expected to live. There is however, a long way to go to finding a cure for this disease, despite all the advancements made over the years. Better forms of treatment which will prolong life, new ways to control and combat the relentless cycle of infections and inflammations, as well as developing a comprehensive understanding of the basic defect responsible for CF, are all steps towards finding a cure or an effective control for Cystic Fibrosis.
The first annual Terry Fox Run in 1981 was organized in conjunction with the Canadian Cancer Society. In 1988, The Terry Fox Foundation became a Trust, independent of the Canadian Cancer Society, and received tax-exempt charitable status under the Income Tax Act. All money raised by the Foundation is distributed through the National Cancer Institute of Canada.
The Terry Fox Foundation strives to maintain the heroic efforts and integrity that Terry himself embodied. It is a grassroots organization that does not seek government funding for administration or fundraising costs other than small grants for temporary, part-time help. The Foundation must therefore rely heavily on the generosity of the private sector to support its activities. Currently, 87 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to fund cancer research.
