Western Fencers win Gold and Silver Medals at Ontario Winter Games.
March 11-14, 2004 - London 2004

The western varsity fencing team is proud to recognize the accomplishments of Istvan (Steve) Berkes and Ryan Mitchell. After a stellar OUA season, Steve and Ryan both competed in the 2004 Ontario Winter Games (OWG) held here in London Friday the 12th and Saturday the 13th of March.

Ryan took home 2 Gold medals, winning both individual and team Men’s Epee combat. Steve also triumphed for Western, winning the Silver medal in Men’s team Foil.
The OWG was the premier tournament of the season, acting as the Ontario Junior Championships, where only the top fencers of the season qualified.

This OWG fencing success followed close after Western’s achievement at the OUA Championships held at Royal Military College in Kingston February 29-30, 2004.
The varsity fencing team sent 5 of its men’s and women’s teams and 9 individual fencers to the OUAs. Ryan Mitchell was successful at this Championship, helping his Men’s Epee team of Phil Mullin, Nathan Naval and Brian Chow secure a Silver medal. Captain Phil Mullen also won the Bronze medal for Men’s Individual foil. A special thanks goes to Brigitte Gagne for her coaching, efforts at the OWGs and enthusiasm throughout the season.
