Recycling
The confusion of what can and can't be recycled is a common issue brought up by our members. This issue is made no less complex by the fact that the City of London, and Western use different recycling contractors, and as such run two totally different recycling programs. We've filtered through the mess to provide you with the information you need to know:
In London
Keep them SEPARATE. Beverage Containters and Paper go into different bins. If you are from a municipality that does single stream recycling such as Toronto, it might take some getting used to.
All plastic* bottles, jugs, tubs and trays with the numbers 1 through 7 on the bottom can be recycled. This includes clear plastic ‘clamshell’ containers.
*There are exceptions,
Please do not include: foam plastic packaging, (e.g. StyrofoamTM), plastic bags, plastic wrap (e.g. bubble wrap), and ‘blisterpak’ packaging (e.g. the rigid clear plastic cover on toys, electronics, etc.) View Poster Here
London.ca has produced a very nice FAQ regarding recycling. Among other things, it has a list of specific materials that they can, and cannot recycle. Most notable on the "don't recycle" list is waxy paper products; this includes frozen food containers and the infamous coffee cups. Also note that coffee cup lids cannot be recycled either, this is a common misconception.
London Recycling FAQ
London also has a free electronics recycling program. If you're throwing away computer parts or the like, you'll definitely want to have a look at their guide:
Electronics Recycling
The London website is a great resource if you're a London resident. Their search function also works very well if there are any other issues you are curious about.
At UWO
The following materials are recyclable at UWO (as of May 2009): Electronics: batteries, ink cartridges, cell phones, computers, other electronic devices or related items. EnviroWestern operates a battery disposal at InfoSource. We have provided them with a bin and they contact us when it is full. We then notify Facilities Management and Western Office Supplies to coordinate a pick up. We also have a disposal bin in the EnviroWestern office. The other items can be disposed of by consulting Recylcing@Western.
Beverage containers: aluminum cans, tin cans, glass bottles and jars, and plastic bottles and tubs with the recycle symbol #1,2,4 and 5, milk and juice cartons, drink boxes, aluminum foil and pie plates, beverage and liquid containers.
Paper products: Co-mingled paper includes newspapers, catalogues, magazines, phone books, envelopes, fine and coloured paper. Cardboard recycling includes cardboard boxes, egg cartons, clean pizza boxes, cereal boxes, tissue boxes and packing boxes. Cardboard materials are still accepted when flattened and placed next to trash receptacles.
Organics: food waste can be placed in compost receptacle available at Centre Spot cafeteria in the UCC and in some staff buildings and other buildings at UWO. Leaf litter and landscape organic waste is composted by the Grounds Division of Facilities Management. Also see http://dowhatyoucan.ca/
for more information on disposal of hazardous materials.
Facilities Management in partnership with EnviroWestern also conducts the Western Recycling Challenge. Through unannounced, random audits, the challenge will encourage campus building inhabitants to be mindful of their waste by comparing their results to one another.
