Happy hour was here – not!

On Feb.11, 1983 The Spoke and The Elbow Room were denied the right to reduce alcohol prices during certain times of the day by Western's administration.

The proposal, made by Spoke manager Martin Paulaitus, was for bars to reduce alcohol prices between noon and 6 p.m. Monday to Wednesday to $1 for a bottle of beer and 50 cents for draft beer.

The grounds for refusal were a standing school policy for uniform liquor prices at all campus establishments and the idea that reduced liquor prices would promote drinking on campus.

"If people are induced to drink by the cheapest price, they would go to the liquor store, not to a bar," Paulaitus told The Gazette.
