LETTERS

Hannon still making waves

Re: Mr. Hannon was not justified, Jan. 14

To the Editor:

This letter is written in response to Edward Kiernan's request that the Arts Students' Council be reprimanded for inviting Gerald Hannon to speak at Western. After reading Mr. Kiernan's letter I am afraid that he has misinterpreted the purpose of Mr. Hannon's visit.

Mr. Hannon came to Western to discuss the "media and moral panic." This subject is clearly exemplified by Mr. Kiernan's inability to focus on the issues. The purpose of Mr. Hannon's visit was to discuss the impact of the public's assumptions drawn from the media. I believe there is a substantial difference between this subject and Mr. Hannon visiting our campus to "assert his right to have sex with 10-year-old boys."

The forum in which Mr. Hannon expressed his personal beliefs was a question and response period. As inquiring students have the right to receive honest answers, Mr. Hannon has the right to answer honestly.

Although the ASC does not condone all of Mr. Hannon's beliefs, we do believe in the freedom of expression. The students of Western have the right to choose and this right is our freedom.

VP, Arts Students' Council
