TIME WARP

Western's male and female track and field teams were placed on probation for a year and a half by the chair of Intercollegiate Athletics, The Gazette reported on this day in 1986.

The teams were being punished for violation of intercollegiate regulations prohibiting drinking on team buses. The sentence included a ban on overnight trips and a reduction of the number of athletes permitted to attend meets away from home.

The women's team was ranked No.1 in Canada at the time and the men's team was ranked No.2.
