The tunnel under Western Rd. leading from campus to Saugeen-Maitland Hall was a little empty in 1975, The Gazette reported March 25.

The tunnel, which had been built the previous year for $175,000, was not being used by students crossing to and from campus.

At peak rush hour times, only 709 students used the tunnel during one noon hour session and 84 during a regular part of the day.

A maximum of 47 per cent of them used it during morning rush hour traffic.

The university put up signs encouraging its use, but it did not seem to help. The administration also met with the Saugeen residence council to establish why students were not using the tunnel.

Among student complaints about the tunnel was that the stairs were too steep.
