Student's duty

Re: Rubbish on Concrete Beach, Sept. 25

To the Editor:

This is in response to last week's complaint about the garbage left on Concrete Beach during greek week. I believe it is every student's duty to promote and maintain the cleanliness of our campus for all to enjoy. I doubt, however, the garbage problem is strictly a result of those mentioned. As for parking, many other groups have also required the use of Concrete Beach for numerous reasons.

I find very little logic in how the lack of ridding one's garbage has, in any way, even a mild connection to the tragic hazing death of a student. I also find it very presumptuous for such strong conclusions to be made about a specific group without sufficient knowledge or experience. I believe your concern about fraternities and sororities lies significantly deeper than the issue of campus littering. It has forever been a policy on Western's campus that hazing is strictly prohibited.

I hope, in the future, everyone does their part to keep our campus clean and beautiful, while at the same time, refraining from making unwarranted claims and singling out a group on an issue which involves all students.
