First aid is first rate

Re: Orientation week safety

To the Editor:
I am writing in regard to the great team work that the Student Emergency Response Team (SERT) enjoyed this past O-Week. SERT is a volunteer organization affiliated with Student Health Services. Our mission is to enhance the safety in the university community through the provision of emergency response services and educational programs.

This year, as in years past, our team provided first aid training for sophs and covered events during Orientation Week, in addition to being on-call for the usual Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.. Unfortunately, we also had to respond to a number of calls that required first-aid treatment. We were very fortunate, however, to find that at most of these calls, when we arrived, someone else had already begun either the necessary first aid or had at least provided emotional support that both helped the casualty as well as our team members. In some cases, these people also continued to help us for the duration of the situation.

Once again, from all of us here at SERT, thank you and we hope that we won't need your help again in the near future. On a final note, all of you who are thinking of being a soph next year: please be careful, the majority of our calls during this year's O-Week involved Sophs.
