Excellent analysis

Re: Hardcourt tragedy, Jan.28

To the Editor:
Congratulations to John Dinner, Gazette sportswriter, for his sober examination of the Latrell Sprewell fiasco. The mere suggestion that Sprewell has been ill-treated by the NBA and the Golden State Warriors is both absurd and insulting. It is absurd for the simple reason that assault and uttering death threats are criminal acts, regardless of whether the perpetrator is a professional athlete or not.

Secondly, Sprewell's objection to his punishment on the grounds of racism (either on the part of Carlesimo or the NBA) is insulting to those who have fought to end racial prejudice. Would those who accompanied Martin Luther King Jr. in his march on Washington on August 28, 1963 be satisfied to see their commitment to racial and religious equality is being invoked to ensure that a thug with modest athletic talents is given another $4 million? Would they be happy to know their crusade is resting safely in the hands of attorney Johnnie Cochrane?

No, I don't think so either.
