Western Round-up

Men's Track and Field
Last Saturday, the Mustangs competed at the Macomb College Open in Detroit, Michigan. With many of the team's top athletes sitting out the competition to increase their training load and intensity, two of Western's lesser-known athletes were given a chance to shine. Veteran Brad Turner, who is second on Western's all-time top list of vaulters, won the silver medal, while rookie Steven Hurst, a Saskatchewan native, won a medal for the second time in his university career with a 13.61 metre triple jump, good for silver. The jump was his second best ever after a 13.74-metre effort at the Don Wright Team Challenge on Jan.10.

Men's Volleyball
Western travelled to Quebec City over the weekend for the University of Laval Invitational tournament in hopes of gaining respect and a national ranking. However, over the three-day meet, Western was only able to win one match – a 13-15, 16-14, 15-6, 15-9 victory over the University of Montréal. Holding a 1-3 record, the Mustangs were still able to climb into a berth for the bronze medal game, but fell 3-1 games (15-6, 15-10, 12-15, 12-7) to Dalhousie University.
