Big Kahuna candidates throw hats in the ring

The torch has been lit for the University Students' Council Presidential Olympics and as the games begin, there are only five athletes going for gold.

When the nominations closed at 4 p.m. yesterday, it was official – Ian Armour, Peter Hill, Brett Slade, Warren Tilston and Jarmila Zakova will be the competitors for the 1998 USC presidential elections. This year's candidate pool is the smallest since 1993, when there were only four candidates, and is a significant decrease from last year's ballot of nine candidates.

Opening ceremonies will take place on Monday when the campaigning officially begins with the posting of the candidates' Web sites. The first forum will be held Tues. Jan. 27 at noon in the student lounge of the St. James Building at Brescia College. Forums will be scheduled each day at various areas on campus and at the affiliate colleges until voting days on Feb. 11 and 12 – when Western students get the chance to be the judges of this competition.

Online voting is back this year and USC Chief Returning Officer Tim Morris is hoping more students will choose to vote electronically than last year. "We're working towards having the entire voting process automated in the near future."
