Fee'd to death

Re: Excess supplementary fees

To the Editor:
Upon waiting in line to receive my T2202 in order to file my income tax, I was unpleasantly surprised to discover that I owed yet more money to mediated learning for a correspondence course I am enrolled in. After painstakingly writing out a cheque for $75, I proceeded over to the mediated learning office to find out what the money was for. I was told that it was a supplementary fee that everyone enrolled in a correspondence course was required to pay. I asked what the money paid for and they told me it was to cover mailing costs. I really have a big problem with this amount for mailing costs. Seeing as I have just finished sending out five packages by courier, I am aware of the costs; however those packages came to a total of $66. As if I am not already paying enough in tuition costs for a course that I must teach to myself and that sends me about six mailings, five of which are through regular Canada Post and which I paid $104 for the text and required readings!!!!

The worst part about this whole scenario is that I must swallow it. There isn't anything I can do. I hope that anyone who reads this letter will think twice when planning to enroll in a course through mediated learning at Western.
