OPINIONS

No fun in abuse

Re: Trailer trash talk, March 18

To the Editor:
I would like to reply to Mr. Michael W. McCallum, regarding his comments about the Danno comic. The issue at hand Mr. McCallum, is not one of making fun of "Trailer Trash." The issue is the manner in which the subject of violence against women was treated. You claim the comic was acceptable because it made fun of the abuser and did not make fun of the victim. I applaud you for being brave enough to express that opinion, but I must say that it is a very frightening opinion. Are we to assume that it is funny when a man beats his wife? Or when a father beats his children? Or when a man rapes a woman? Ask the families of the 14 victims of the Montreal Massacre if the actions of Marc Lepine were humorous. Regardless of who we are talking about, the abuser or the victim, the issue of violence against women is not a laughing matter.
