The Western women's basketball team opened their 1998/99 campaign on Saturday with a shaky 61-57 victory over the Waterloo Athenas in Waterloo.
The Mustangs struggled early in the first half shooting only 25 per cent from the field, while the upstart Athenas nailed 40 per cent of their attempts. At the end of the half, Western found themselves down by three, 30-27.
The team was able to rebound for the last half of the game with better shooting (44 per cent field goal average) and better defence.
Shooting guard Jenn Haylor led the charge for the 'Stangs with 24 points while forward Nadia Pezzolo added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Adrianna Pompa also had 10 rebounds for the Western cause.
For Waterloo, Meg Clancy racked up 19 points and 10 rebounds as the team leader in both categories. Teammates Kristen Eisner and Adrienne Cillis had nine and eight points respectively.
The Mustangs will play a double header against Lakehead this weekend to open their home schedule. Both Friday's and Saturday's games will be played at 7 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
