Take a look at the big picture

Re: Protest the protest, Oct. 8

To the Editor:

It is unfortunate that you seem to have done little or no research on orientation before you decided to write a letter full of ignorant remarks. The fact that you equate Orientation Week to a time to party, get drunk and have meaningless sex makes you almost as uninformed – no wait, more uninformed than some members of senior administration.

What you have failed to realize Erin, is that O-week is just the tip of the iceberg. Rest assured the fight for O-week is connected to a bigger picture. Admin has ignored pleas of students, parents, faculty, alumni and the London community with respect to issues such as deregulation, massive tuition increases and housing options for all upper-year students.

You see Erin, the silencing of the student voice on orientation is a stepping stone in the silencing of the student as a whole. Many of the students that you are "ashamed" of are the same students who were on the floor of Senate last year trying to fight tuition hikes. Erin Schroeder, what have you done lately to help preserve the student voice? Have you ever voiced your concerns to student Senators and members of the Board of Governors? Do you even know who they are?

That's what I thought. You've done nothing but attempt to belittle the efforts of those who care about the current and future students of Western. Open your eyes to the whole picture. Stop your ignorant whining, get off your soapbox and sign a "Save Frosh Week" petition. We are all in this together.
