coughing up debt

Re: Ignorant students

To the Editor:

This letter is in to the three young women who chose to comment on the fact that I was wearing a garbage bag and a towel to keep dry in the rain. Yes, I do know how "ridiculous" I look. I also know that as a sole support parent I live far below the "poverty line" even with the help of OSAP.

I know that my child has warm clothes, boots, coats and mittens even though I do not. I know that she has three healthy meals and snacks each and every day. I know that I am getting a good education and am working hard to provide the best for my child.

I know that under the current financial funding situation I will have to repay $38,500 in student loans AFTER LOAN FORGIVENESS. I know that I am unable to work hours outside of 9-5, Mon.-Fri. or I lose precious time with my child and have to pay $4-$5/hour for babysitting.

I know that since I attend class and work during the day I am unable to start to study until 10 p.m.. I know that I often do not get to sleep until 1 a.m. and am up again at 5:30. But most of all I know that I am blessed in comparison with the vast majority of humans on this earth.

I know I have opportunities that others have died trying to achieve for themselves and their children. And I know that without the help of family, friends and God I would not be able to do the little that I am doing now. But most of all, I know that I can do without hearing rude, inconsiderate and degrading comments like yours.
