coughing up debt

Different experience

Re: Aiding the lost, Oct. 14

To the Editor:

I'd like to respond to Khoa Tran's comment that, "O-week isn't for everyone and that's why they are encouraged to come and go as they please and to only participate if they wish."

Without commenting on whether or not I think O-week should be cancelled, let me correct Khoa by saying that in my experience with O-week (1996), first-year students were very much discouraged from not taking part in the program.

I am recalling Sophs who kicked at our doors at eight in the morning and stood screaming in the hallways until we reluctantly emerged from our rooms. I may even go so far to say we were quite definitely forced to participate. It is possible O-week has changed in the last couple of years, or that Khoa's experience as an engineering Frosh/Soph was different from mine.

Perhaps making O-week entirely optional for first-year students is the solution to the O-week dilemma.
