Falling into fashion '98

Well, it's that time of year again. The time when The Gazette's Focus section enlightens its readers as to the hippest, hottest, coolest, grooviest and overall best looks of the season.

Inside these pages, you'll find the chicest evening wear alongside the funkiest street wear and everything in between – from the runway to the pavement. This time around, instead of hitting the malls in search of the best looks, we've headed downtown to see what Richmond Row and the downtown core have to offer. Many thanks to our participating merchants, Archie's, Basic Blues, David Findlay, Frilly Lizard, Saffron Road and Willy's.

Why is fall such a great time of year for fashion? Think about it – unlike summer, you can layer it on without dying of heatstroke, but you don't have to top your look off with a parka, boots, and mitts like in January. As for spring, by the time the weather co-operates, school is out and we're all long gone. Fall is the time of year for cozy sweaters and comfy jeans, brilliant sunlit colour and harvest moon evenings.

It's also the time of year to start looking forward to fancy evenings filled with all-out formal wear. There's a noticeable return to glamour, with something to suit everyone's tastes. For those preparing to graduate and join the real world, there are sharp suits and dress coats even your mother would approve of. If mother-approved isn't the look you're after, be sure to check out the urban styles complete with velvet tube tops and leopard skin coats – faux, of course.

So sit back, relax, and ignore all those pressing issues, such as homework, for a little while and plunge yourself into something that's really important – what to wear this season.
