Monday marks the beginning of Equity Week and an attempt at a better understanding of Western's diversity.
"The purpose of Equity Week, in short, is to promote and raise awareness and recognize the diversity of Western," said Najeeb Shafiq, University Students' Council equity commissioner.
In previous years the event has been very small, only featuring a booth from equity services in the atrium of the University Community Centre, Shafiq said. This year, diversity groups, whether they be political, cultural, religious or whatever, will have booths set up in the atrium to promote awareness of their group and the issues they consider important, he added.
This is a way to encourage people from minority groups to become involved, Shafiq said. "It will be the biggest and most visible Equity Week ever it is a week about learning."
In an article published yesterday, it was incorrectly stated that Jane Thornton won several high school athlete of the year awards. Thornton never won such an award, but rather won several club awards.
