Sending the right message

Re: Let him play, Oct. 27

To the Editor:

How stupid are people at this university? Everyone seems to focus on the fact that Preston Haynes is a football player and therefore should be allowed to play football no matter what his crimes. All of these people seem to be missing the point.

This point is the fact that Ian Munroe, a student here, was run down by a car while on campus! Sure that's a crime and should be handled by the police. However, the university charges students money to be here and therefore, they are responsible for our safety.

It is Peter Mercer's job to make sure that we are safe on campus. He sent a message to Preston Haynes that hitting people with a car on campus isn't acceptable. It's in my mind that he didn't go far enough. Peter Mercer needs to send out a stronger message and expel Preston Haynes!

Preston Haynes turned himself in to the police, even though there was no warrant for his arrest. This seems like an admission of guilt to me. If he goes unpunished by the university, what kind of message are we sending?
