it was sugar
Hired gun to rescue
By Mark Brown
Western's senior administration officially got some help last night to deal with the increased work load brought on by the on-going negotiations with the University of Western Ontario Faculty Association.
Although retired professor and former chair for the department of geography Donald Janelle has been working as the acting assistant vice-provost academic affairs since the beginning of September, the position was made official last night during the Board of Govenors meeting.
Janelle will help Roma Harris, associate vice-provost academic affairs, with her duties including the Senate promotion and tenure committee, the Senate sabbatical leave committee and the Senate grievance committee.
Harris said it became obvious over the summer she would need extra help to allow her to devote more attention to negotiations with the faculty association.
She explained the negotiation period is especially important since she is currently responsible to sit on several committees in her role as associate vice-provost academic affairs and registrar.
Janelle is only filling a temporary position, Harris said. She added there just is not enough money to fill the role permanently. "I think we are going to be in a strained budgetary situation for the next year."
Janelle said he was approached some time late this spring and asked if he would fill this position. "I had experience as a department chair so my experience working with faculty lent itself to the position.
"I'm delighted to help," he said. He added he will not be responsible for any of the negotiations.
"It came as a surprise to me and my colleagues it's unusual," said Aniko Varpalotai, president of the UWOFA. Still, she added she was aware of how busy the associate vice-provost has been and considers it to be appropriate as long as the position is temporary.
Certainly as time goes on it will become more time consuming as we are spending a lot of time on preparing for negotiations, she said. "I'm glad to see they are taking negotiations seriously."
