1989 – 10 years ago, Allan Mayers was named athlete of the week for coming in first place in the 60 metre dash at the OUAA (now referred to as Ontario University Athletics) championships. Mayers was a second-year economics major who took up track as an extra-curricular activity.

Mustang head coach Bob Vigars called Mayers "unbelievable," considering the fact he never ran track in high school. Mayers hadn't taken track seriously and only became interested in it at university. He took his interest and turned it into a talent as he was ranked No. 1 in the country in the sprint.

Also in 1989, the Mustang men's basketball team took out the University of Toronto Blues in the OUAA championship game, winning the Wilson Cup with a 98-93 victory. They travelled to the CIAU championships as the No. 4 seed.
