Only you can prevent crime

University Police Department Const. Wendy McGowan said the UPD are preparing for Crime Prevention Week which begins on Monday.

"We try to sprinkle [the information] out throughout the year. We don't just focus it on one week," McGowan said.

She added there will be events taking place all next week, including Wednesday, when safety concerns and basic self-defense principles will be discussed at Medway-Sydenham Hall.

Raising awareness about violence

A group of Western students have been raising public awareness about violence against women.

Lucia Cipriano, a graduate student in the department of visual arts, helped organize the distribution of small circular photos of the war in Kosovo to raise awareness of violence around the world. The photos were made into accessories with the use of red coloured safety pins.

"The purpose of pining the images of violence on people was to relate the public art practice to social activism," Cipriano said.
