Western researchers help psychiatric patients

Ontario's psychiatric patients can hope for a brighter future thanks to a group of researchers at Western.

A three-year study, led by Western psychology professor Cheryl Forchuk, will take a new approach in guiding discharged patients towards a better life outside the hospital, said Elizabeth Jenson, research co-ordinator of the study.

Jenson explained a peer supporter who has successfully used mental health services, will be matched with each participant. The goal of this relationship is to provide patients with an empathic individual as they make their transition back into the community, she said.
