HALIFAX (NS) – Thursday night at the World Trade and Convention Centre in Halifax, the Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union said "you got game" – formally – to a select group of student hoopsters.

In the course of the glitzy awards ceremony, first and second all-Canadian team honours were presented to 10 players selected as the very best in Canada.

Among the first-team all-Canadian award recipients was Western's own Micah Bourdeau, the smooth shooting co-captain whose memorable five year CIAU basketball career wrapped up this weekend.

"It's my last time competing or working towards winning this championship, so it's the last time I'm gonna be in Halifax," Bourdeau said. "I kinda started out here – I went to [the University of] St. Mary's for two years – so it's great to win this kind of award here. It's something I've been working for the whole time I've been in university."

While the veteran guard was excited to win, he admitted the announcement on Thursday was not exactly news to him. "I found out about eight days ago, so it wasn't a big shock but I was still a little bit nervous walking up on stage in front of all these players," he said.

Western head coach Craig Boydell earned an honourable mention in the coach of the year category. Boydell said he was honoured to be named, but was far from bowled over by his accomplishment.

"As my father used to say, 'That and seven bucks will get me into the movies,'" he joked. "It's been fun coaching Micah, no doubt about it – but it's been fun coaching him because he raised everybody else's game and I think that's the key."

Marg McGregor, chief executive officer of the CIAU and a presenter at the ceremony, said she thought the evening was a big success. "It was quite special for the athletes to be recognized in front of their peers. We were very pleased with the way the event went," she remarked.
