Re: "Cover photo same as pornography" Feb. 17

To the Editor:

This is a response to the comments made by Brianne Macdonald about the Charity Ball picture on the front page.

Brianne states that every male she knows liked the picture and every female she knows was shocked and outraged. Now, maybe every male she knows is a horny little bastard, but I'm sure there were guys on campus who were just as offended by the picture as she was.

Also, I'd be willing to bet there are women on campus who weren't shocked by this picture. My point is two-fold.

Firstly, don't fly off the handle because you were outraged by the picture or because the five females you asked were just as pissed off. I highly doubt Brianne did an extensive study on this to find out what Western's males and females felt about the picture and had she, I'm sure she'd find most people are not so prudish.

Secondly, understand that sex sells and a shocking picture gets people to pick up the paper and read the story. Someone sees the cover and says, "Thank you God, for this wonderful, wonderful picture," picks up the paper, reads it and learns about the Charity Ball and other things happening on campus. Or someone sees the cover page and says, "What the hell!? I don't believe those sexually deviant editors at The Gazette would do something like this," then they pick up the paper and look for more problems to bitch about.

The careful observer notices that in both scenarios, the person picks up a paper and reads it.

Oh yes, one more thing – she equates the picture with porn? Two girls kissing is porn? You have got to be kidding. Now maybe if there was a little breast cupping going on I might kind of understand where she was coming from, but even then I don't know. Maybe she should make that trip down to the drug store so next time she'll know what the heck she's talking about.

The editors did a good job creating a "buzz" about the paper and have got people reading it even after the so-called "pornographic photo" was displayed on the cover.

Don't let some anal retentive people with poor marketing skills tell you otherwise.
