Western vs. McMaster: a classic confrontation
This week's millennium moment is a special Western edition featuring the men's basketball team.
Nine years ago, the team had the magic touch as they took the 1991 Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union championship crown.
The road to the national title was a long one, which started with a narrow 98-97 victory in the Ontario University Athletics finals against the Concordia Stingers. Western went into the CIAU Final Eight tournament ranked number one and faced Laurentian University in the opening match. Western handed them an easy 85-72 defeat after battling back from an early 25 point deficit.
The semifinal match was against the University of Victoria Vikings. Western walked away with a 87-77 victory, with the help of strong free throw shooting.
The Guelph Gryphons awaited the Mustangs in the finals. Western had previously faced their longtime rivals in the OUA West finals, which went down to the wire. This game, however, was all purple as Western took a 39-33 lead at the half. They didn't falter the rest of the way and were able to capture the national championship the first ever for Western.
Fast forward to 2000 and the Mustangs again stand on the precipice of another trip to Halifax for the CIAU championships. Ranked second in the nation, Western faces their first obstacle this weekend against the University of McMaster Marauders in the OUA West finals.
