To the Editor:
This past weekend, I came to school to get some work done and all I could see, wherever I looked, was garbage.
I did my undergrad at the University of Guelph. I was under the impression, apparently quite falsely, that coming to Western would be a "jump up." My train of thought was along the lines of: bigger school, more funds, better facilities, better reputation.
Well, Western is certainly bigger and we have more money coming in. However, certain facilities are definitely worse than at Guelph and I'm not sure how long this school can fly on its reputation as a party school and not much else.
But I'll save that for another time.
I don't understand where all the money goes. I could not get to the front doors of the UCC this weekend without literally wading through the garbage piled around and in front of the building.
I was horrified, disgusted but most of all, I was embarrassed. Is this the face we put on for our visitors? Visitors who may be parents or friends of our students, or who may want to donate funds to our school. And never mind visitors, I pay about $6,500 in tuition and I don't think I should have to hold my nose and watch where I walk to get into a building on campus.
This Sunday I was ashamed to say that I am a student here. When I see the money we pour into Homecoming events for things like tents, entertainment, food etc., not to mention certain strange and entirely useless pieces of art, I want to know why we cannot afford to pay staff to keep this school clean.
