Female student assaulted

University police are urging female students to take extra precautions following an assault near campus early Monday.

At about 12:15 a.m. Monday, a female student was assaulted by an unknown male while walking towards the university on the pathway behind the Richmond Street apartment buildings. The victim was able to escape without injury.

Police are now looking for a black male, between 5'8" and 5'10", who was seen wearing a baggy leather jacket and wristbands, said Const. Wendy McGowan of the University Police Department.

Crime alerts have been posted on the pathway where the incident occurred and police are urging female students not to walk alone at night.

McGowan said she is hoping more students will make use of Western's Foot Patrol, which regularly operates between 6 p.m. and 1 a.m., but will begin at 9 p.m. during the exam period.

Foot Patrol volunteers will walk students home to any of the Richmond Street apartments.

"If it's necessary for students to be on-campus after the hours of Foot Patrol, UPD will do its best to respond to and accommodate transportation within the university," McGowan said.

In another incident, the London Police Department are investigating a sexual attack on a 17-year-old female at a downtown hotel early Sunday morning, explained Const. Ryan Holland of LPD.

Prior to the assault, the girl was with friends and a group of males she had met earlier in the evening, Holland said. She was then taken to a separate room where she was sexually assaulted by one of the males and assaulted by another, he added. Both men fled the scene immediately after the incident.

Police are looking for a heavy set black male who is 5'8", 180 lbs and a second black male who is 5'6". Both men are between 20 and 25-years-old.
