Strong need for men's rights?

Re: "'F' word not so frightening," Oct. 12

To the Editor:

I was disgusted by the hypocrisy and blindness illustrated in Nicole Nelson's column.

While I normally respect and agree with Nelson's views, I cannot condone what she had to say in her column.

Nelson would have us dismiss the stereotypical views of feminists, but employs superficial views of men in the process – "ask your father how taking pregnancy leave from work affected his career."

I believe Nelson has not fully appreciated the fact there are men's issues as well as women's issues. Nowadays, there are instances where women have things better than men, but we seldom see groups fighting this inequality.

For example, I believe there are roughly two girls to every guy at Western. This has not seen the development of academic support groups like WISDOM for men though.

Apparently, even with twice as many girls as boys at Western, we must still protect the education of female students while exhibiting little to no concern for males.

Where is the equality in this?

I will happily encourage people to become feminists, meaning one who is concerned with equality for both sexes, but I suggest Nelson do the same.
