A beginners guide to university bigwigs

In light of the ongoing election campaigns for student positions on BOG and Senate, here is a primer on what these two governing bodies are and what they do for you. For more information, visit www.uwo.ca/univsec/.

Board of Governors

- responsibilities include: appointment of the president, vice-presidents, deans, faculty and staff; setting salaries and benefits; fixing fees; establishing regulations for the use of university buildings, grounds and ancillary operations; expending and investing university funds

- recommendations to BOG come from Committees of the Board, such as the Property & Finance Committee, Campus & Community Affairs Committee and the Audit Committee

- Twenty-eight members sit on BOG, including 17 external members, four faculty, two administrative staff, one graduate student and two undergraduate students

- BOG meets approximately five times a year


Senate

- responsibilities include: approving new programs of study; establishing and revising academic policy; considering policy matters relating to fellowships, scholarships and other awards; conducting convocation; creating, modifying or dissolving faculty councils and committees

- recommendations to Senate come from committees such as University Planning (SCUP), Academic Policy and Awards (SCAPA) and Operations/Agenda

- Senate makes recommendations to BOG on such matters as the establishment or termination of academic units and programs of instruction; the establishment of chairs, scholarships, fellowships, bursaries and other awards; affiliation agreements with colleges; the governance and control of Western residences

- One hundred and three members of Senate, including 46 members elected by faculty, two administrative staff, four graduate students and 14 undergraduate students

- Senate meets approximately ten times per year
