Student puts herself in old people's shoes

To the Editor:

Last week, as I stood on an overly crowded Richmond 6 bus on the way to school, I watched a frail, elderly woman board.

Much to my surprise, nobody offered the woman a seat, not even the people sitting at the front of the bus. It was not the first time I have witnessed such an event and my gut instinct tells me, sadly, it was not the last.

Taking the bus is a part of daily life for many Western students. Bus etiquette is not something students often talk about, but it is still important to be conscious of others' needs.

Students – put yourselves in the older woman's shoes. You enter a crowded bus and all the seats are taken. Not one person offers you a seat and you are left to stand crushed amidst droves of students. Your lack of seat would likely leave you feeling frustrated, angry and scared – the same emotions an elderly person feels.

The bus is often the only mode of transportation for elderly people. They need the bus as much as students, if not more. Just because students outnumber older people on the bus does not mean the older people have any less of a right to be sitting.

Have some respect for elderly people in our community. They are still people, people who desperately need a seat on the bus. So students, promise one thing – the next time you are on the bus and an older person boards, get up and give them your seat!

What's the worst that will happen? You'll have to stand for a couple minutes. The positive energy you acquire from doing a good deed will keep you standing tall.
