Even though more first-year students are moving into Western's residences each year, the University Students' Council and Western's housing and ancillary services are trying to strike up a deal to guarantee beds to Orientation Week sophs.

At Wednesday's USC meeting, VP-student affairs Wes Brown said the Orientation Governance Board – consisting of student representatives, Western administration and the Orientation Planning Committee – have been discussing the possibility of guaranteeing residence sophs a spot in the building.

Housing's current proposal offers 113 guaranteed beds to sophs, equaling one soph per floor, Brown said, adding the remainder of the sophs not getting a bed would be put into the lottery system for a spot in residence.

If the USC were to accept the terms of the offer, the plan would then be presented to Western's Senate, Brown said.

"With the number of first-year beds increasing and the decreasing availability for upper-year students, we thought it would be a great idea to guarantee spots for sophs," said Bob Gough, manager of housing and ancillary services.

However, a number of questions arose from the USC meeting with concerns ranging from the proposal requiring residence sophs to have a minimum 65 per cent average to housing services having a say in de-sophing an O-week soph.

King's College councillor Marty Zahavich suggested a separate information meeting and forum, allowing sophs and head sophs to be included in the discussion.

Brown agreed and set the meeting Wednesday, Jan. 30 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in council chambers.
