Intramurally screwed over

To the Editor:

Recreational intramural sports leagues at Campus Recreation are supposed to be about recreation – having fun in a leisurely setting.

We pay for this so we can play a few games and maybe, just maybe, even win in the playoffs. In a recreational league, you'd also expect flexibility – an understanding that, as students, we may have other interests as well as our love for sport.

Unfortunately, I do not believe this to be the case.

As a result of a slack week trip, our team was unable to make a playoff game and asked for it to be rescheduled.

As a compromise to free up time at an over-used facility, an administrative decision made by Intramural Sports caused the playoff schedule to be compressed into a very short amount of time. This made the rescheduling of games impossible and has forced a large number of teams, including ours, to forfeit the remainder of their seasons.

Given the busy schedule of students, it is my belief that rescheduling should be considered an inevitable part of a recreational league. More flexibility should be built into the schedule, especially since a playoff forfeiture ends the season for a team.

Would it really be that difficult to create a few empty timeslots for the league, ready to be filled by whatever game needs to be rescheduled? It may just be a recreational league, but, for some of us, it's our only chance to win an athletic championship.

I hate to see the hopes of my teammates dashed because of bureaucratic difficulties. It is too late to fix what happened this year, but next term's schedules have yet to be created.

If you have plan to play intramural sports at Western in the future, e-mail your concerns to ims.coordinator@uwo.ca to ensure future athletes are fully able to experience the pleasure that recreational sports can bring.
