The Photos Don't Say

How fucked up we were
that night
The goosed-down, jacked up
Buzz
Of alcohol and pheromones and giddy
Twenty-something bliss
just to be drinking and laughing
again
the enormity, the weight of the world
shifted to somebody else's
self-inflicting shoulders–
at least for a night anyway

And the photos don't say
How you(I?) felt later on
in that cramped,
Crowded, shoved together room
The red in your eyes, the blue in my hand
Mussed up pillows, fucked on bed
And maybe I'm kind of glad they can't
Cause if I have to wrap my head around,
the bloody reasons and searing words
I might just never open

Staring at myself too long
in the bathroom mirror
cracked glass, cracked head
but why not for once?
Don't do that, Theresa,
you'll scare the shit out
of yourself
you mean I haven't done that already
look at who I am,
dyed hair, smeared eyes, tight shirt...
But the photos don't say
the lies of my life, the home of my head
in banging and burying
nights of making love to the wall
And just how looking at your hands
Could make me
cry

The photos don't say
how I look at you now
through loud music, smoke-tied bars
caesars in tow, armed to the hilt
senses perked, tongue alert
feeling your nerves
slide along my eyes
but seeing
the way you stand near me,
arms tensed, throat just parched
lips bit
they can't keep their mouths shut
those photos of mine
glossy smiles
enflamed
oh, starry night
with the first spoken words
