Coins and food for charity

The United Way is launching a residence campaign to get students involved and raise money for charity.

The campaign begins today and will run until Oct. 17, said Candice Arboleda, a sponsored employee of the United Way.

The goal is to raise $8,500, Arboleda said, adding, for the most part, the campaigns will be self-run within the residences.

Residence staff liaisons and philanthropy commissioners will be working with students in each residence to organize campaigns, she said.

"Everyone said [they] will work collectively – work together and set aside competition," Arboleda said.

One example of a fundraising tactic is a coin wall, she explained, in which a United Way poster is put up and then filled with coins. Saugeen-Maitland Hall residence is contemplating putting one on each floor, Arboleda added.

Other events throughout the campaign include Eat Your Way to the Top, where students can taste different foods on eight levels of the Social Science Building on Oct. 17 for $8 a ticket, she explained.

For more information contact Aboleda or Lyn Hill at 438-1721.
