Clean up the couch now!

Re: "Any engineering foresight?" Sept. 27

To the Editor:

A recent letter challenged the students responsible for seating the couch in the Thames River to demonstrate some ecological responsibility and promptly have the couch removed.

Although it has been claimed that the engineers were not responsible for the prank, given the much bragged about practical ingenuity of such a faculty, I am startled they have yet to accept this challenge, regardless of who the perpetrators were.

Over a week has passed since these concerns were couched. In this time, no feat of engineering triumph has been undertaken to remove the ratty, waterlogged piece of furniture. I imagine such a removal could be made effortless through the construction of an elaborate system of gears and pulleys, 100 feet of nylon rope, an aluminum boom and appropriate counterweights.

One can only speculate that the failure of the engineers to act swiftly in removing the couch is caused by the engineers having devoted all of their energies to planning next year's bold stunt.

Although some argue that the couch provides the troubled river with some environmental integrity, we can all agree the couch is an eyesore that must be removed as a matter of aesthetic principle. When this occurs, I would expect The Gazette to publish the less-than-flattering photos of the entire process.
