CD REVIEW: Operation Makeout
Rundown: For their second album, Hang Loose, the Vancouver-based trio Operation Makeout, of Katie Lapi, Jesse Gander and Anna Clarke, energetically march their way through 10 biting songs tied together by their reflections on being stuck in places that are neither here nor there. This general theme of directionlessness results in a sense of urgency and frustration displayed by co-vocalists Lapi and Gander.
tracks: On "On the Steps," the trails lead to "nowhere interesting" and thoughts have a tendency to vanish, while on "Take the Rains," the weary traveller ventures through an endless maze of temporary homes, hotels and comfortable restaurants. In the fantastic "Current Events," Lapi gets entangled in an energy so electric, it leaves her vocals as uncontrollable and volatile as a water-soaked wire flailing at all sides.
like: When you first insert this CD into your player, you may notice that Operation Makeout sounds remarkably like Olympia punks Sleater-Kinney. But, once you get beyond the opening track "Life on Your Windowsill," the S-K comparisons slowly melt away and what's left will leave your salivating tongue hanging out in desperation for another round of tonsil wrestling.
