Intramural sports not worth space

Re: "Intramural b-ball showdown," Mar. 21

To the Editor:

I was quite surprised to see a half page article written on the Men's Super League Tier I Basketball Championship in The Gazette. While all of us in the Intramural Sports program always appreciate a little positive recognition from the school paper, I find it odd that The Gazette would publish a half page article on an intramural game when many of our varsity teams don't even get a quarter page article.

I have been an employee with Intramurals for four years now, but have also been involved with women's varsity hockey in some capacity over the past three years and I have seen how The Gazette doesn't give a lot of recognition towards the smaller varsity teams on campus unless they shine, or suffer from lack of success.

While I love our Intramural Sports program, I think most of the students at Western would like to see a little more news about the varsity teams they help fund, as opposed to an article about an intramural game written mostly because someone on the team was friends with a member of The Gazette staff.
