The University Students' Council's 12th annual Awards Reception attracted a wild crowd of students and teachers last night.

The awards ceremony was held in the McKellar Room of the University Community Centre. "Planning has gone on since the first day of school," said Michelle Zeller, teaching awards commissioner for the USC and recipient of a Student Award of Merit.

"The success we have experienced through these awards would not have been possible without [Scotiabank]," explained Lil Chieh, USC VP-student affairs, adding sponsors also included the UWO Alumni Association and the USC.

During the acceptance speeches, those professors who received teaching awards offered gratitude to their students.

"[Students] have brought out in me qualities that I never knew I had," said kinesiology professor Garry Lapenskie.

"I am proud to be nominated by my students, who I am privileged to be teaching," said Maureen Smith an education professor.

The Future of Western Award, the Student Award of Merit and the USC Alumni Award recognized the success of students.

"We recognize those who excel not only in the classroom, but outside the classroom," said Western President Paul Davenport. "[There are] remarkable things at Western worth preserving, a lot of it due to extraordinary students."

Toben Alexander, president of the Media, Information and Technoculture Students' Council, received the USC Alumni Award. "I had to go to USC meetings and committee meetings, like the Presidential Task Force on Building Academic Communities," Alexander said, in describing his extracurricular involvement.

The Future of Western Award was awarded to Anton Vigden. The recipients of the Student Award of Merit were Lindsay Buckingham, Michael Lee-Poy, Lateef Nurmohamed, Ashley Pitcher and Michelle Zeller. The USC Alumni Award was given to Toben Alexander and Khurram Khan. The Awards of Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching were presented to Bruce Morrison, Garry Lapenskie, Maureen Smith and Anton Allahar.
