Western dumps Queen's
Western's men's volleyball team finished off their week of retribution in Kingston on Saturday, beating the Queen's University Golden Gaels 3-2 in the first round of the Ontario University Athletics playoffs.
After taking out McMaster University last Wednesday and boosting themselves into the playoffs, Western took on Queen's, who they had previously not beaten this season.
Western dropped in the hole early, losing the first two games by a close margin 24-26, 28-30. With their season hanging in the balance, the Mustangs bucked back to clinch the next game 25-23 and handled the Gaels in the fourth, 25-18, before finishing them off on their own court, 15-13 in the fifth serve-point game.
"John Gadsden and Josh Logan shut down two of the best middle blockers in Canada," said Western coach Jim Sage, almost surprisingly, concerning Western's two middles at the net.
Sage added a unique decision on his part came into play.
"I usually have switched setters in the past when we have been down two games," Sage explained. "But I stayed with Jeff Fallows, who set a very consistent game."
The Mustangs will put their three match winning streak on the line tonight at Alumni Hall against Guelph University, with a return match in their best of three playoff series, set for Friday night in Guelph.
