Mustangs win overtime thriller

The Western Mustangs men's basketball team went into the lion's den and came out alive.

The den I'm referring to is Burridge Gym on the campus of McMaster University. The Mustangs defeated the Marauders, ranked seventh in the country, 82-81 in front of a packed Mac crowd, writing another chapter of one of the long standing rivalries in Ontario West basketball.

"This is a rivalry; no doubt about it," said Mustangs head coach Craig Boydell. "[McMaster] schedules their Marauder weekend around the game."

Once again, point guard Jimmy Grozelle dominated all facets of the game, despite an injured knee. Grozelle was questionable until game time, but suited up and scored a game high 29 points in the victory, including two crucial free throws with 7.4 seconds.

"Joe Raso [McMaster head coach] made a great comment after the game when he said, 'Players like Jimmy play in games like these,'" Boydell said.

Amazingly, the Mustangs shot 44 free throws and buried a mind-boggling 36. The adept shooting of the Mustangs really came into play in the overtime frame, when they went eight for eight, as opposed to the Marauders who shot an inept two of six.

Adam Peaker was once again a machine among the giants, with exemplary play for a guard who is only 6'2". The third-year guard finished with 19 points and eight rebounds.

The Mustangs seem to have righted the ship after their six game losing streak, winning consecutive games over the Waterloo Warriors, Windsor Lancers and now McMaster.

Boydell said the squad is trying to utilize their speed and discipline on the offensive end.

"We're trying to wear teams down," Boydell said. "These wins can do nothing but build confidence, because in every game we have been down double digits in the second half and fought back."
