Mustangs holiday action

"While Western students were participating in incessant debauchery and stuffing their faces with holiday goodness, the Mustangs men's hockey and basketball teams were shoring up their weaknesses during a holiday exhibition schedule.

The men's basketball team welcomed two all-star teams to Alumni Hall, the Power to Choose all-stars and the GT Express all-stars.

Former Waterloo point guard Mano Watsa and athletic forward Shane Nicely were too much for the Mustangs on Dec. 21, as the Mustangs bowed down 92-83. Western point guard Jim Grozelle was tremendous in defeat, scoring 27 points while guard Adam Peaker added 16.

Fortunately, the Mustangs redeemed themselves in their second holiday contest, embarrassing the undermanned GT Express 106-68 behind the stunning three-point barrage of guard Mark Porte and captain Grozelle.

On the ice, the Mustang men went undefeated, carrying home the Holiday Classic championship with a 4-2 victory over the Brock Badgers. Centre Jeff Martin, right wingers Tim Zafiris and Brad Yeo and defenseman Abe Herbst notched a goal apiece. The victory followed a preliminary dismantling of the Queen's Golden Gaels 10-1.

In addition, the Mustangs began the 2003 portion of their schedule with a lofty 8-2 win against the Windsor Lancers on Jan. 4 at Thompson Arena.
