Know when to swipe 'em

For the second consecutive year, the Campus Rewards Program is generating cash back for students who swipe their cards at various locations across the city. However, participating vendors say reaction to the card has been mixed.

According to Michael Rudd, VP-finance for the University Students' Council, by swiping the reward card, a percentage of the purchase is returned in the form of points. One point on the card translates into $1 that can be used at any of the locations where cards are accepted, he explained.

"[The cards] are free of charge to students," Rudd said, noting there are between 3,200 and 3,500 students using the cards continuously this year.

Laurie Knott, a salesperson from the store From Mars, said few people have swiped the card at the store.

Knot added if nothing changes to increase use of the card, From Mars will opt out of the program once their one-year contract expires.

According to Dan Smith, manager of bars and restaurants for the USC, there is an increase in the amount of students using the rewards card at The Spoke and The Wave.

"I think it's a good marketing tool for us. It's also a nice way for the USC to give something back to the students," Smith said.

"We continue to see growth in use of the cards on and off campus," said Mark Osborne, assistant general manager for the USC, adding there are now approximately 100 off-campus locations that accept the cards.

The USC will continue to offer the rewards program to students for the next academic year, Osborne added.

"I have one, but I never use it," said fourth-year psychology student Alissa Hurwitz.
