Defending Leaf pride

Re: "Leafs and their city are one stupid country," Jan. 21

To the Editor:

Mr. Manchur, we thought we knew everything when we were in first-year too, but don't worry, you'll come around. You'll stop going to the Ridout and you will start developing more mature attitudes about the world. But until then, your opinions are not welcome, nor are they regarded as legitimate.

Your claim that no one outside of southwestern Ontario loves the "beloved" Maple Leafs is simply wrong, as they are the number one draw in the league. We can understand that you resent the fact that Winnipeg was stripped of its franchise and replaced by one in Phoenix, of all places, but deal with it.

We see you have an impressive 367 points in the hockey pool, yet seem to know dick-all about being a fan. Fans that bash the team one day and praise it the next are called "bandwagon fans" – every team has them, and they are not real fans. Obviously, the Jets had too many.

You talk about the ownership of the Leafs being too interested in profit. Well, the Jets did a bang-up job there! It's time to learn a few things about the Leafs private corporate structure – now tell us they don't want a cup. Come on Lee, you should have known these things!

The reason CBC shows the Leafs on Hockey Night in Canada is because they have the most fans among Canadian teams. Are you criticizing CBC for trying to profit too?

The Leafs don't need your support, but thanks for your opinion. It made us realize how much we hate fans like you. If you want, we'll teach you a few more things over a warm OV at the Ridout, on us.
