Roy Retires

Last week's retirement of the greatest goalie ever – that's right, ever – signals the end of an era in hockey. Patrick Roy made the contemporary style of goaltending what it is and his competitive fire, outspokenness and bravado, coupled with stupefying stats and records, make him a legend along the lines of Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan and Babe Ruth. A four-time Stanley Cup champion and three-time playoff MVP, Roy was the type of athlete who, during his career, stood on the peak of Mount Everest when his competitors struggled just to make it to dry land.
