Gay figure-skaters?

Re: "Kickin' it with Alma Moir," Mar. 6

To the Editor:

I was surprised to read in your sports section last week that Western figure skating coach Alma Moir considers, in the same breath, Kurt Browning's talent – and his ability to "rid the sport of the gay male stereotype" – as factors that furthered figure skating. Perhaps Browning would be as surprised as I am.

Heaven forbid that a male figure skater be mistakenly perceived as gay. I cannot imagine any greater slight. We must protect our sensitive male figure skaters from such emasculating onslaughts.

Would Moir propose that we rid the sport of such openly gay skaters as Emmanuel Sandhu and Brian Orser to further this commendable goal?
