I Wake this Morning in a Box

...I wake this morning in a box
of iron stone and clay —
my mother’s voice, I hear it say:
“he’s better off this way”

I kneel at midday in a church
with anger shame and fear —
of me, my priest is heard to sear:
“we knew the boy was queer”

I die this evening in a field
of roses wind and tree —
“I thought that rest awaited me
and that this pen would pardon me”

but verse has failed to set me free...

—Justin Quesnelle
