CD REVIEW: Evanescence
Rundown: Amy Lee's vocals are haunting yet powerful,
and they provide Evanescence with a distinctiveness that will see the
rock quartet hit mainstream before Fallen even sees its Canadian release.
Key Tracks: The band's first exposure came on the Daredevil
soundtrack with the gripping "Bring Me To Life," but the album
offers a veritable mosaic of treasures, from thumping rock in "Whisper"
to the soft, textured "My Immortal." A truly inspired track,
intermixing delicate piano with a thrashing chorus is "Imaginary."
Sounds Like: Heaven colliding with hell. Evanescence
is an amazing debut, but overall it is truly melancholic. Comparisons
to Garbage and even Tori Amos or the Cranberries are inevitable, but while
there are a few pop rock tracks we've all heard before, most of this album
is excitingly fresh.
